Nokia, in a major milestone, successfully achieved the first seamless hand-off from a cellular network to a VoIP WiFi network using UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access). In laymen’s terms this means that when you enter a WiFi hotspot, say at home, your current phone call could be handed off from Cingular’s cellular network to a much less expensive packet-based WiFi network. I haven’t had a chance to finish my "2.0 be or not 2.0 be" post… coming soon, but in the mean time…
Microsoft has hit the Web2.0 community with a bang and a resounding echo is hopefully being heard at your nearest Googleplex. Microsoft has announced an early, yes Beta, release of Microsoft Live at a recent event. Some features are available now, with a planned rollout of additional tools in the coming months. There are many, many articles all over the web on it right now from people who actually attended the event, so please read up on those. But the one release that really impresses me is their next generation MSN client. It fuses web-based chat, MSN Mappoint, VoIP-to-POTS calls, your address book and your email all in one slick interface. You can check out a review and screen cap through TechCrunch

There is a huge buzz going on around the blogosphere about the on-again, off-again GoogleBase. Regardless of its current status, it looks like Google will be rolling out a Quickbase-like service. A roll your own database where you create the fields and tables and then populate the data.
This makes total sense in terms of their business model. Anyone who follows Google, or search for that matter, knows that web search is only the tip of the iceberg. Corporate and commercial databases contain immense amounts of data that is currently rarely accessible to the web crawlers. The process of searching these repositories is called "deep search" and it is said to be the next big breakthrough in search.
So with GoogleBase, Google will hope to entice small business users and consumers to start using their product as a structured data store. And if the APIs are done properly, I have a feeling it will see heavy usage. It is a great solution for a lot of use cases. Your data will now live on their servers, which are built for redundancy and uptime… you don’t really have to worry about them going out of business any time soon, and your sales listings will be automattically pulled into Froogle.
Touche Google, touche…

While in the rounds of starting to plan for BarCampBoston (more info in a bit), David Beisel, of GenuineVC and Masthead Venture Partners, announced that he is organizing a meetup in the Cambridge area (location TBD) for November 8th @ 6:30pm. The event is in the same vein as the TechCrunch meetups… get a bunch of business/techies/forward thinkers together, add drinks and demos and have a good time.
To find out more or let him know you are coming, goto: http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/bostonweb/

It looks like the BarCamp fever is spreading east. I have always been interested in organizing a local group of technologists, entrepreneurs, investors and just general forward thinkers. Boston has such a great pool of intelligent, talented people but very few events are organized to get them into one location.
If you are in the Boston area and interested in joining us, be sure to add your name (and email) to the list on the BarCamp wiki.

"A renewable resource for those working with fewer resources."
Ross Mayfield of SocialText has started a Wiki space called Startup Exchange for all things start-up. It features links and resources for Entrepreneurship, Angel Investors and Venture Capital. The resource has already grown tremendously since it started and its growing daily with great content. People have added Blogrolls for each category, free legal documents and an event and networking space. This is one of the most valuable resources I have seen yet and its great to see the strong community of contributors.

I just downloaded and installed the Flock Developer Preview. So far I am fairly impressed. At the most rudimentary level, it is a nice clean build of firefox with some improved graphics. On top of that it adds some nice social features and strong support for APIs such as Flickr and del.icio.us. I will post more after I have had more time to play around with it.
*UPDATE* Later that night Flock opened the URL to the public without the login. So be sure to go download it, but be prepared for bugs.

So I returned safely from The Gathering and had an amazing time. Never in my life have I been surrounded by such an amazingly inspirational group. There were entrepreneurs, inventors, musicans and artists of all different backgrounds and perspectives. I sat there in awe as each person spoke about their passions… be it their careers, their families, or some life altering experience. These people were all truly inspirational through what they have been able to accomplish and also by how they push themselves to continue to do more — humanitarianly, professionally and personally.
Overall a fantastic weekend of friends, food, fun and forethought… I can’t wait for the next one

I have been neglecting my writing lately, but I try to justify it and say that its for good reasons. Tim and I are hard at work cranking out a prototype and writing up the business plan / executive summary. We have had some great meeting with potential investors and advisors who have helped push us in the right direction. Needless to say, its been a great experience so far, and its only getting started.
I am off this weekend to a really interesting event. My friend George started a retreat a few years ago called The Gathering, this years version is called G4. It is a retreat for entrepreneurs, technologists and artists. This year it is being held at a great location out in the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Last year’s was held at Guy Laliberte’s (Founder of Cirque du Soliel) mansion. This is my first time going and I am incredibly flattered to have been invited and I really am looking forward to the event. I will be sure to post pictures, now that I have my own camera, and blog about the event when I return.
On a side note… its GREAT to have hockey back
especially in 1080i High Definition… thanks HDNet
