Boston Web Innovators Meetup

Img_0319_1_1Last night I attended the Boston Web Innovators meetup at Tommy Doyle’s in Cambridge. It was organized by David Beisel of Genuine VC and Masthead Venture Partners. I have long complained about the lack of tech/entrepreneurship events in the Boston area. For such a small and densely intelligent city, there are few events that bring together people doing innovative, forward-looking things. I have always been jealous of my friends in SF and even NYC where these type of events are common place.

It was great to see such a great turnout, and we got to talk to some
really sharp people and see some demos. David invited any self-funded
company to come and present at the event, and we got to see
presentations from Blogniscient, reddit and Kiko. It was interesting to see that two of the aforementioned companies are Y Combinator creations. Its a great project and Paul’s essays are not to be missed.

I had some great talks with Greg Gibson, Peter Caputa
and David among others. It was interesting to talk to David about his
perspective as a VC on the changing landscape of entrepreneurship and
micro-investments. As I have said before, I think its great that people
are being more prudent about when and how they raise capital, but in
the end Venture Capital won’t be affected in a large way, as there are
glut of companies that need that size of capital investment and project
long sales cycles. As he stated, is an issue of economics and the size
of your fund that should determine the size and number of investments
you make. This current trend is just allowing Angel investors and
smaller funds to get a larger piece of the action.

So overall it was great to finally feel like there is some life
behind all of this brain power in Boston, and it was great to be a part
of it last night. I hope we can turn this into a regular event, and I
know David is planning another one in the coming months. So if you
missed this one, be sure to catch the next one.

Tim and I even made it into one of the pictures that Susan Kaup (sooz.com) took. A bunch of the other people from last night have posted about the event, so be sure to check out the links below.
