GoogleBase - My Take
Posted by Ryan Sarver under: Business; Technology .
There is a huge buzz going on around the blogosphere about the on-again, off-again GoogleBase. Regardless of its current status, it looks like Google will be rolling out a Quickbase-like service. A roll your own database where you create the fields and tables and then populate the data.
This makes total sense in terms of their business model. Anyone who follows Google, or search for that matter, knows that web search is only the tip of the iceberg. Corporate and commercial databases contain immense amounts of data that is currently rarely accessible to the web crawlers. The process of searching these repositories is called "deep search" and it is said to be the next big breakthrough in search.
So with GoogleBase, Google will hope to entice small business users and consumers to start using their product as a structured data store. And if the APIs are done properly, I have a feeling it will see heavy usage. It is a great solution for a lot of use cases. Your data will now live on their servers, which are built for redundancy and uptime… you don’t really have to worry about them going out of business any time soon, and your sales listings will be automattically pulled into Froogle.
Touche Google, touche…
