Murdoch Taking on MTV with MySpace?

Posted by Ryan Sarver under: Business .

… at least that is what Om thinks. I do have to say I have been intrigued by the recent purchase of MySpace by Murdoch’s NewsCorp for $580M, and that is certainly an interesting spin on the dynamics of the deal. Om makes some very good points related to the recent success of the AOL broadcast of Live8 and how their online numbers usurped the traditional media outlets like MTV and ABC.

“No matter what you may think of Rupert Murdoch, he never overpays and you cant underestimate his brilliance. After all, he challenged the 3 major TV broadcast networks by creating Fox, then he challenged CNN by launching FoxNews, and hes currently revamping FX with a slate of edgy original programming to go against HBO.”

i don’t tip either way on the political scale, but one can only hope that dollar signs from the soon-to-be-vieled “independence” of myspace will supress expressing his political views (or rather hiring people to purport those views for him)in what is currently a nice hodgepodge of differing opinions and ideas.

my only relief is that those who believe in the wonder of independent music (which is why i visit)- if they find that myspace is not their space anymore- will move elsewhere.

…in either case, i stopped watching MTV when they took headbanger’s ball off the air.
